A Short History of Bowen Island

Squamish Nation

The Squamish are a coast Salish people whose traditional territory stretches from Point Grey in Vancouver to Roberts Creek, encompassing all of the islands in Howe Sound, including Bowen Island.  The Squamish name for the Island is Xwlíl’xhwm, meaning “Fast Drumming Ground”.  Some authors attribute the name to the sound made by the ocean as it passes through the tiny pass between the Island’s northern point and Finisterre Island.

In the Squamish creation story, Xwlíl’xhwm is often referred to as the place where the deer were created.

On Xwlíl’xhwm, the Squamish established a tiny village called Qole’laqom and here they hunted, fished or stopped over during long voyages up and down the coast.  While there remains no trace of the village, archaeological surveys conducted by Dr. Charles Borden and a team of students from the University of British Columbia in the 1970’s discovered clam middens at the perimeter of the Island.  More recently, a developer’s survey unearthed a fire pit and arrow head.  The whole Island is thought to have high potential for such sites.

What graduates have said about Shelley's online & in-person Teacher Training experiences:

"Shelley’s teachings are multidimensional, she is full of wisdom, curiosity and magic. So many profound, honest, real and personal experiences. Shelley provides an incredibly safe, creative and uplifting environment. Whether you are continuing to develop your own spiritual practise or growing as a teacher/facilitator, Shelley meets you exactly where you are and offers exactly what you need and more, you perhaps could never have imagined. The training is a considered balance of Asana practise, Pranayama, Philosophy and Retreat practise. With small intimate groups, Shelley is able to be there for 1:1s and infuse the training with everyday teachings all day. You feel immersed in a world where everything is sacred. Inspirational."

"As a fitness educator and former nurse, I have actively taught yoga for several years. However, I wanted
to add more depth to my yoga teachings and took on an extensive search looking for the perfect
teacher. I consulted the internet, friends and local yoga mentors. My search ended when I met Shelley via Zoom.
A pandemic brings with it much uncertainty including the prospect of online yoga certification. I was
needlessly concerned as Shelley put me at ease immediately. Shelley’s extensive practitioner resume
speaks for itself, but the experience of her teacher training and mentoring offered me so much more
than I had anticipated. Honest, open hearted access, one on one mentoring, small class size,
accountability and genuine learning resulted in a deep understanding of the yoga principles and it’s
applications on and off the mat. I also found I achieved some physical relief from chronic back pain
which has been resistant to traditional methods of healing (massage, physiotherapy, etc).
Shelley takes a genuine intersect in her students. The relationship that emerges is one of authenticity,
care and kindness. Her high standard for teaching is apparent and resonates throughout.
The online training more than prepared me as I move forward in my yoga journey and in life. I would
highly recommend if you are searching, as I was, search no more."

"Shelley’s 200 Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training has been a dynamic experience. As a Yoga teacher and student, the content and practical work has added a rich dimension to my teaching and personal practice.

Each module offered thematic discussion, tools, resources and practices which have helped me to expand personally and professionally.  The one-on-one mentorships were a bonus as we could elaborate on specific topics, discuss ideas and get a fresh perspective for our projects.

Shelley’s warmth, knowledge, and passion is clearly evident. She is very encouraging, supportive and experienced.

I would definitely recommend taking an online training with Shelley. Her course has helped me to deepen my practice and has inspired me to further my studies."

"Stepping into a practice with Shelley has always been a transformative experience. Her sequencing, cues and her knowledge of yoga is comprehensive and unique. I still find myself in poses that I have never been in after 15 years of practice when I am under her guidance.

I have thought about participating in a Yoga Teacher Training for many years. One of the barriers to enrolling was the block of time necessary to commit to a destination training or even local trainings. Having the ability to do the training online part-time has allowed for me to complete the training with a ton of flexibility as I was able to travel on the weekends, complete my training and still have a large portion of my day open on the weekends.

If you are looking to begin the journey into yoga, I highly recommend this as the place to start. Shelley’s ability to seamlessly teach yoga on and off the mat was the exactly the experience I was looking for to deepen my practice."

"I had been teaching classes consistently after my 200 hour training in 2016; however, I really felt that I had reached a plateau in my current abilities and skills. Lucky for me, another local rural yoga teacher whom I had done classes with personally recommended that I sign up for the 300-hour YTT with Shelley. This pandemic has been challenging, but one advantage is that many aspects of life moved online and as someone in an isolated rural area, it gave me the opportunity to do this training live online with Shelley, an opportunity I may not have had otherwise!.

Shelley's training was an amazing fit because I had not previously learned the universal principles and how to teach yoga from the inside out! She takes yoga classes to many different levels, from anatomy, alignment principles to philosophy to in depth class theme integration. She has deep connections with her past students and they gave back by attending some of the training weekends as guests to enhance the modules. The online component did not hinder our small class at all - we practiced teaching intensively and got in depth constructive feedback from Shelley and other students. Right away in the training I was able to integrate her feedback and my new learning to teach better classes to my own yoga students.

Shelley has taught me that there is so much more to know about yoga; I really am in awe of the experience and depth of knowledge that she brings to her teaching. Thank you Shelley, you have been a catalyst for more inspiration and confidence to continue my self-study and teaching in yoga!"
